Quick answer

Book the travel you can afford now, then sort the rest. Ask your employer about leave, check if a Centrelink advance payment applies, and if your passport has lapsed, call 131 232 about an urgent appointment on compassionate grounds. If you need a bigger sum for flights, accommodation and time off work, homeowners and business owners can often fund it fastest with equity or a business facility.

Key points

  • Urgent passports can be fast-tracked on compassionate grounds
  • The 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre helps when something goes wrong overseas
  • Consular loans exist only in exceptional cases and come with strings
  • Budget for the whole trip, not just the airfare

The phone rings late at night and suddenly you need to be in Perth, or Manila, or Manchester by tomorrow. Money shouldn’t be the thing that keeps you from someone who needs you.

Quick answer: lock in the travel you can cover right now, then fill the gaps. Check your passport, your leave, and whether any Centrelink advance applies. For a bigger trip with weeks off work, equity in a property or a business facility is usually the fastest larger source.

How quickly can I sort a passport for urgent travel?

If your passport has expired or gone missing, that’s the first clock to beat. The Australian Passport Office offers three speeds:

Option Extra fee on top of the standard fee Processing time
Standard None Check the Passport Office’s current processing times
Fast Track $104 5 business days after a complete application
Priority $300 2 business days after a complete application
Compassionate or compelling need Priority fee, if required Call 131 232 to book an appointment at a passport office

Postage and delivery aren’t included in those timeframes. For a seriously ill or injured immediate family member, bring evidence of the urgent need to your appointment. A letter from the hospital or doctor is the obvious place to start.

What will the trip really cost, all up?

Most people budget for the flight and forget the rest. An emergency trip tends to include:

  • last-minute airfares, sometimes for two or three family members
  • accommodation near the hospital, plus local transport
  • time off work, or a business without its owner for a fortnight
  • a passport fee, visa fees and travel insurance
  • a buffer in case the stay stretches, or the worst happens and there are funeral costs

Our page on funeral costs covers that last, hard scenario gently. For everything else, write the number down. Borrowing too little and having to scramble again from a hospital corridor is miserable.

Where can I find travel money in a hurry?

Run down this list. Most of it is faster and cheaper than any loan.

  1. Family pooling. Someone may cover the flight while you cover accommodation.
  2. Your employer. Ask about compassionate leave, personal leave and any pay advance policy.
  3. Centrelink advance payment. People on certain Services Australia payments can sometimes draw part of it early, then repay it from later payments across 13 fortnights.
  4. Insurance and super. Some policies cover travel to a seriously ill relative; read yours.
  5. A secured loan. Homeowners and business owners with equity can often unlock a larger sum quickly. Property-backed business loans span $20,000 through to $5,000,000, and amounts toward the lower end can sometimes land the same day.
  6. Business cash-flow finance. A trading business can keep the doors open while you’re away, with unsecured facilities usually somewhere between $5,000 and $500,000, depending on what your bank statements show.

Need travel money personally, with no property behind you? Send it through anyway. Someone reviews each enquiry and suggests the most workable path, though nobody here can commit to a personal loan size or timeframe sight unseen. If you’re self-employed, our page on fast loans for the self-employed is worth a read. Ready now? Start the 60-second check →

Self-employed or running a business?

The trip is only half the cost when the business stops while you’re gone. Before you leave, line up who answers the phone, which invoices still need sending, and which bills will fall due in your absence. A small buffer to cover a fortnight of fixed costs can mean coming home to a business that kept ticking, rather than a second emergency.

What help is there if something goes wrong overseas?

The Australian Government runs a 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre: 1300 555 135 from within Australia, or +61 2 6261 3305 from overseas. If anyone’s life is in danger, contact local emergency services first.

On money, Smartraveller is blunt. Consular staff can’t lend money except in exceptional circumstances. If they do, you sign a deed agreeing to repay within six months, and you may need to hand over your passport on return to Australia until the debt is cleared. The government also doesn’t arrange money transfers; it points travellers to insurance, family, friends, banks, travel agents and employers.

So treat the consular loan as a last-ditch safety net, not a funding plan.

Sending money to family overseas instead

Sometimes the most useful thing isn’t you on a plane but money in a relative’s hands tonight, for a hospital deposit or medicine. Before you transfer:

  • confirm the request by voice with someone you know, on a number you already have
  • check what the receiving hospital or clinic actually needs, and whether it can be paid directly
  • compare transfer fees and exchange margins between your bank and a licensed remittance service
  • keep receipts, in case an insurer or the estate later reimburses the cost

Paying a hospital directly, where it’s possible, takes the guesswork out of where the money goes.

How do I avoid scams and traps when I’m rushing?

People racing to a bedside are a favourite target. Watch for:

  • “emergency” messages from a relative’s new number asking for money; call their old number or another family member first
  • fake airline or travel-agent sites selling cheap last-minute fares
  • lenders promising approval in minutes with no questions; see urgent loan scams
  • payday loans and stacked buy-now-pay-later, which feel easy at the airport and painful a month later

Our ranking of the fastest ways to get money puts the free and low-cost options first. The wider family emergency guide and our honest map of emergency loans fill in the rest.

Could funding get you on a plane by tomorrow?

If the passport’s sorted and family has chipped in but there’s still a gap, one brief enquiry will tell you what’s realistic before you board.

There’s no credit check at the first-enquiry stage. Your details aren’t shopped around a crowd of finance companies, which keeps the drive to the airport quiet. An actual human looks over what you’ve sent and calls you. Please give honest figures, including the full trip cost and any property or business you have, so the first option you hear is one that actually works.

See which travel funding you might qualify for and get to the people who need you.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

    Right now

Check your passport expiry and confirm what the family member needs most: you there tomorrow, or money sent tonight.

  2. 2

    Tonight

Hold a flight if the airline allows it, and tell your employer or clients you'll be away.

  3. 3

    Tomorrow morning

Call 131 232 about an urgent passport if needed, and ask your super fund, insurer or Centrelink what help applies.

  4. 4

    Tomorrow arvo

If the trip still has a funding gap, send a 60-second enquiry so a person can find the quickest route.
