Quick answer

Bad credit slows things down but rarely shuts every door. Lenders that assess case by case look at why the marks happened, whether they're paid or settled, and what your income or security looks like now. Property-secured and some business loans weigh the asset and cash flow heavily, while for personal needs, free and no-interest options may come first. Honest disclosure is the fastest path.

Key points

  • A default can stay on your credit report for 5 years
  • Paid or explained defaults read very differently from fresh ones
  • Security or strong cash flow can outweigh a patchy file
  • Stacking applications after a rejection makes things worse
  • Fixing a credit report error is free
How long a default stays
5 years, per the OAIC
How long repayment history stays
2 years
Fastest fix you control
Disclose the marks upfront and explain them

A rough patch a few years ago shouldn’t decide what happens this week. It does change which doors you knock on, though.

Bad credit doesn’t automatically mean no. It means the lender needs a reason to look past the marks: time since they happened, proof they’re paid, steady income or an asset as security. Give them that reason upfront and urgent funding is still possible. Hide it and the answer comes back slowly, then negative.

Can I really get a fast loan with bad credit?

Yes, in plenty of cases. The question is less “will anyone lend?” and more “who weighs my strengths over my history?”.

Here’s roughly how different lending routes treat a damaged file:

Route How much the credit file matters What can outweigh it
Mainstream personal loan A lot, scored early and hard Little, beyond strong income
Property-secured loan Less, assessed case by case Equity in residential or commercial property
Business loan on turnover Moderate Consistent deposits in bank statements
No interest loan (if eligible) Not credit-score driven Income limits and ability to repay

For business owners with property, secured loans of $20,000 to $5,000,000 are assessed case by case for bad credit and ATO debt. That’s a very different conversation from a bank’s automated scorecard. Our guide to borrowing against your home equity fast explains how the property side works.

How long do black marks stay on my credit report?

Longer than most people think, and shorter than it feels. These periods come from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

What’s recorded How long it stays
Repayment history 2 years
Financial hardship information 1 year
Default 5 years
Credit enquiry 5 years
Court judgment 5 years
Serious credit infringement 7 years

Two things worth knowing. A paid default still shows, but the OAIC says the credit provider must update the listing to record the payment, and lenders notice the difference.

Also, a default can’t simply appear out of nowhere. The overdue amount has to be $150 or more, at least 60 days overdue, and the provider must send written notices before listing it. If something’s on your report that you were never told about, that’s worth querying. And a hardship arrangement doesn’t hit your score, according to Moneysmart, although it does appear on your report for a year.

What do lenders actually look at when your credit is bad?

A human assessor is trying to answer one question: is this person likely to repay this loan, now? Old history is evidence, not a verdict.

They’ll usually weigh:

  • Age of the marks. A default from four years back reads very differently from one last month.
  • Status. Paid, settled or still owing?
  • The story. Illness, a business that closed, a separation, a dispute with a provider.
  • Now. Current income, current bank statements, current debts.
  • Security. Property equity can carry much of the decision on secured loans.

Write the story down in three or four plain sentences. It saves the assessor a phone call and saves you half a day.

Keep it factual rather than emotional. “Business closed in 2023, supplier account defaulted, paid in full in 2024, now employed full time” tells a lender everything it needs in one breath.

What should I avoid when I’m desperate and the bank said no?

This is where people with bad credit lose the most time and money. Moneysmart’s advice after a rejection is to find out why, check your credit report and wait before reapplying, because frequent applications can lower your score further.

The common traps:

  • Rapid-fire applications. Each formal application can be recorded as an enquiry, and a cluster of them looks like a red flag.
  • Paying for credit repair. Errors can be fixed for free with the credit reporting body or the lender, and accurate information can’t be removed by anyone.
  • Lenders who target bad credit with high costs. Read fast cash traps before signing anything that sounds too easy.
  • Leaving things out. An undisclosed default discovered mid-assessment can stall or kill an application.

One more: if a lender declines you, ask why. Moneysmart says the lender must tell you if your credit report played a part, and knowing the real reason stops you repeating the same mistake somewhere else.

Want a straight answer on what’s realistic for your file? Our enquiry form comes with no credit check at the asking stage, so you won’t add another enquiry while you work out your options. One person reviews it and calls you, and your file isn’t paraded in front of a long queue of lenders. Ask about your options →

Can I fix my credit while I wait for funding?

Some of it, yes, and you can do it in parallel rather than waiting.

Moneysmart says you can request a free copy of your credit report every three months, and that the main credit reporting bodies may hold different information, so check each one. Look for debts that aren’t yours, wrong addresses, duplicate defaults or a debt shown as unpaid that you’ve cleared.

If you find a mistake, ask the credit reporting body or the lender to correct it. If they won’t, the Australian Financial Complaints Authority offers free dispute resolution. Meanwhile, pay current bills on time and resist any new credit you don’t need.

Illustrative example: Dana had a phone bill default from three years ago that she’d paid off, plus a stable job. Her first lender’s automated system declined her. A lender that looked case by case saw a paid, explained, single default and steady income, which is a very different picture from the score alone.

See if you qualify, bad credit and all

A messy file needs a matchmaker, not a lottery. The aim is to land your application in front of a lender that already considers credit like yours, on the first attempt.

So tell us accurately what’s on your file, roughly when it happened and whether it’s paid. It might feel awkward. It’s also the single fastest thing you can do, because it stops a mismatch before it costs you days.

For personal needs, we’ll point you toward a realistic option even if that’s a free service rather than a loan. For business owners and property owners, we’ll tell you plainly what’s possible. Check what you could qualify for and let a real person do the sorting.

How it works, step by step

    Tonight

Write down every default, judgment or late payment you know about, with dates and whether it's paid.

  2. 2

    Tomorrow morning

Send one enquiry that mentions the marks honestly, so you're matched to a lender that takes them on.

  3. 3

    Tomorrow arvo

Order your free credit reports in the background so any errors can be fixed in parallel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an urgent loan with bad credit in Australia?

Often, yes, but the route matters. Property-secured lending and business loans sized on turnover can look past older marks, and bad credit is considered case by case. For small personal needs, a no interest loan or a Centrelink advance may be faster and cheaper if you're eligible.

How long does a default stay on my credit report?

The OAIC says a default stays on your credit report for 5 years, repayment history for 2 years and a serious credit infringement for 7 years. Paying a default doesn't remove it early, but it is updated to show it's been paid.

Should I use a credit repair company first?

Usually there's no need. Moneysmart notes you can get errors fixed for free by contacting the credit reporting body or the lender, and take it to AFCA if you can't agree. Accurate negative information can't be removed by anyone.

Will asking about a loan make my credit worse?

Not with us. There's no credit check when you first enquire, so asking about your options doesn't add another enquiry to your file.

What do lenders want to know about my bad credit?

What happened, when, whether it's been paid or settled, and what's different now. A short, honest explanation usually helps far more than hoping they won't notice.
